The 2026 BAG Tour season is officially underway, and if the opener at Verdict Ridge Golf Club is any indication of what’s to come, we’re in for a special year.
As 5 Pointz Series Event #1 of 4, the season opener delivered a strong field filled with a mix of fresh faces and seasoned veterans returning to the grind. With competitive fields across every division, the standard was set early — and it was high.
Division A — Wellde Delivers Under Pressure
It was Chris Wellde who stole the show with one of the most memorable finishes we’ve seen on Tour.
Facing one of the toughest closing stretches we’ll encounter all season, Wellde closed out his round in style — birdieing 16, 17, and 18 to secure the victory in dramatic fashion.
Wellde held off a stacked leaderboard that included:
Jerell Fields, who entered the event chasing his fifth consecutive tournament victory
Heavy hitters Andrew Watkins and Dejuan Powell
Defending Tour Champion Stone Dyson, making his Division A debut this season
Division A also welcomed newcomer Matt Heavner, who impressed with a strong Top 5 finish in his first BAG Tour appearance.

Division B — Helmick Stays Hot
In Division B, Joe Helmick picked up right where he left off, firing a stout 74 to claim the win.
Helmick narrowly held off veterans Kevin Demeny and Mike Thornburg in a tightly contested battle.
The division featured a deep field, including:
Newcomers Pete Denny, Cade Kidd, and Shannon Moree
Local standouts Casey Brighton and Mike Tobias defending their home turf
Pre-round favorite Alex Hunter couldn’t quite find his rhythm, while former winner Nick Hinton will look to bounce back in the next event.
One of the biggest storylines? The return of fan-favorite and Tour veteran “The Polish Hammer”, who shook off the rust with a solid T10 finish.

Division D — Wright Defends Home Turf
In Division D, Daniel Wright, the hometown favorite, captured his second BAG Tour victory with a composed round of 91.
Wright didn’t rely on birdies — instead, he leaned on smart course management and avoided costly mistakes to hold off:
David Goldmintz
Lou Meagher
Newcomer Alex Breneman
A disciplined performance that proved once again — on the BAG Tour, minimizing mistakes is often the difference.
