Congratulations to OnPoint Golf athlete, Trey Brown for winning the 2023, Division B Matchplay Bracket Title. This was Trey’s first match play bracket appearance, and he was able to secure the bag over an extremely competitive field. This is definitely one to be proud of.
Trey’s path to the finals was no easy task as he started off with a tough matchup against a formidable opponent in Cameron Bullman. The two had a great battle that came down to the wire. Round 2, Trey faced off against Terrington Myles who was fresh off the upset of Tour Veteran and pre-round match play favorite, The Santee Sleeper, Adam Jolley. Terrington came in ready to play and this was another epic battle that came down to the wire, but ultimately, Trey was able to weather the storm and grind his way to the Final Four. Drake Foster was waiting for Trey in the Final Four and this was not going to be an easy matchup for either opponent. Trey fell behind early in the match and faced an uphill battle coming in on the back 9. His determination and composure helped him capitalize on a few of Drake’s late round mistakes which helped Trey pull ahead and close the match out on 17.
In the Championship match, Trey faced off against Drew Kirksey who had one of the toughest roads to the finals. These two golfers match up pretty well across the board so we knew it could go either way and that we were in store for an exciting Finals Match. Trey had something else in mind as he came out absolutely on fire, splitting fairways, hitting greens and playing virtually mistake free for the first 9 holes. Trey did not miss a fairway on the front nine and only missed one green in regulation. This is exactly the type of play you want to bring to the finals in hopes to keep the pressure up and wear down your opponent, which is exactly what he did. Drew made a few costly mistakes to get behind early and Trey’s consistency made it hard to play catch up.
Hats off to Drew Kirksey for making it to the finals in this division as that is no easy feat. I’m sure this will bring extra motivation to have things cleaned up and ready to go for our upcoming Major at Irish Creek.
